About the Program

The King Abdulaziz Center for World Culture (Ithra) is now accepting applications for the fourth cycle of Creative Solutions, Ithra’s one of a kind four-month immersive design residency. The residency focuses on utilizing immersive technologies (such as augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), mixed reality (MR), immersive audio and haptics) to produce prototypes that explore digital product design or storytelling. Residency outcomes: Finalists of the residency will receive funding up to 375,000 SAR to produce a working prototype of the concept they applied with.

Previous projects from the residency include a children’s prototyping toolkit that utilizes augmented reality, an application that provides immersive soundscape experiences, a mixed reality art installation, a virtual reality escape room, and an animated immersive short film. 

Who is Eligible to Apply?

Before applying to the residency, you must adhere to the following eligibility requirements: 

  1. Minimum age requirements: 18+
  2. Fluency in English
  3. Citizen or resident of the MENA region
  4. Application must be submitted by a group of minimum two individuals

Exceptional Skills and Production Development

  • Residents will spend 2 in-person weeks engaging in extensive masterclasses and hands on workshops in the  Immersive Lab, located at Ithra. During these two weeks, residents will learn the essentials of digital storytelling, XR game engines, and entrepreneurship.
  •  Finalists of the residency will be taken on an all-expenses paid trip to the UK for a week of intensive workshops to enhance their working prototypes.

1. Pre-production Phase:

The pre-production phase is a four-week period staring from June 30th and ending on July 27th. The first two weeks of the pre-production phase will take place virtually, and the last two weeks will take place in person at Ithra.

June 30th - July 13th: virtual attendance
July 14th - July 27th: in-person attendance

During the pre-production phase, residents will be enrolled in masterclasses and workshops that focus their understanding on the entrepreneurial, technical and storytelling foundations of XRs. These sessions will offer residents an opportunity to refine their concepts. Afterwards, residents will pitch their refined concept to a panel of judges, wherein up to 5 finalists will be selected to qualify for the production phase.

2. Production Phase:

The production phase is a 15-week continuation of the residency, completed virtually. As part of the production phase, a selection of residents are nominated to participate in an all-expenses paid one-week intensive bootcamp in the UK, further developing their technical and entrepreneurial skills. 

Finalists of the residency are provided with a dedicated mentor, financial support, a project management team and a development team to complete their paper prototypes in time for the final showcase taking place in November during Ithra’s Creativity Conference, Tanween, with the goal of fostering long term connection, collaboration and future business ventures.
 

Evaluation and Selection Criteria

After the Creative Solutions Residency Program submission phase concludes, Ithra will conduct a thorough review of the ideas to ensure completeness and adherence to the program application guidelines.

Subsequently, an independent jury will evaluate the applications and select the ideas that will be onboarded. For more details, please refer to the evaluation process and criteria.

Announcement of Selected Teams

Representatives of the chosen ideas will receive notifications confirming their selection for the program. Confirmation of participation from the selected participants will be required. Additionally, applicants whose projects were not selected will be notified via email.

The process of selecting participants, starting from the receipt of their applications to the announcement of their names is conducted according to the following outlined steps:

 

Step 1: Registration and Administrative Check of Applications by Ithra

Ithra staff conduct a registration and administrative check to screen the received applications for compliance with Ithra's guidelines and requirements. This includes verifying completeness, submission of samples, and relevance of the proposal’s topic to Ithra's mission. Applications that pass this screening are then forwarded to the jurors via email.

 

Step 2: Evaluation of the Projects by the Jurors

The applications are forwarded to the jury committee, which assesses the projects based on the evaluation criteria outlined below

What is the Creative Solutions residency program?

Creative Solutions, Ithra’s immersive design residency program, is a one of a kind four-month storytelling and product design residency with a singular focus on utilizing immersive technologies such as augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), mixed reality (MR), immersive audio and haptics.

Will my application be accepted if I submitted it in Arabic?

No, the application must be submitted in English, as the residency will be conducted in English in its entirety.

When can I apply to Creative Solutions?

How long is Creative Solutions?

The full duration of the Creative Solutions residency program is 4 months, the pre-production phase of the residency will be in person (2 weeks – In person) and the remainder of the residency will be virtual.

Is there a fee to apply to Creative Solutions?

There is no application or program fee.

Who can apply to Creative Solutions?

To apply to the residency, you have to be resident of the MENA region, fluent in English, and 18 years or older.

Can a solo individual apply to the program?

No, the requirement would be a team of minimum two individuals per application submitted.

What is the due date for submission?

You have to submit your application no later than May 21st, 2024.

What is the difference between the early bird registration deadline (April 21st) and the final deadline (May 21st)?

Submitting your application before the early bird registration deadline will grant you a free review and consultation of your application by the creative solutions team, securing a higher likelihood of getting accepted into the program.

Can I submit multiple applications?

Yes, but under a different team.

Can I edit and resubmit my application?

Yes, but during the open call time frame only.

Will Creative Solutions take care of travel and accommodation expenses if I don’t live in Khobar/Dammam/Dhahran?

Yes, as lodging and travel are provided as part of the residency.
