Sustainable Bag: Biomaterial and Local Legacy

The fashion industry has a problem: overproduction, overconsumption and the tyranny of global fashion over local cultures. These issues are not only disastrous on the environmental level but also on the cultural level. The "Sustainable bag" challenge seeks to foster an exploration of sustainable fashion solutions through the use of bio-materials.

This challenge invites participants to answer the following question: How can fashion be environmentally friendly while achieving sustainability in the local fashion industry?

Through the power of design and innovation, this challenge invites participants to reconsider the role of materials in fashion design, and discover the intersection between culture and sustainability.

The Winning Project

MRG

MRG is a collection where the sea’s gifts — salt and fish scales — are transformed into luxurious evening handbags. The collection features a glass-like material created through a biomaterial that merges two by-products of the sea's harvest in Saudi Arabia, particularly in al-Khobar: salt from desalination and fish scales from the fishing industry. Designed to dissolve and return to their origins, they symbolize a cycle of renewal and harmony, honoring the delicate balance between nature's elements, inspired by the meeting of two seas.

"مَرَجَ الْبَحْرَيْنِ يَلْتَقِيَانِ * بَيْنَهُمَا بَرْزَخٌ لَا يَبْغِيَانِ" (الرحمن: 19-20)

"He released the two seas, meeting side by side; between them is a barrier [so] neither of them transgresses." (Surat Ar-Rahman: 19-20)

This collection is a tribute to Saudi Arabia, a country without permanent rivers. It compensates for this drought with the abundant seas that surround it and offers an abundance of hidden treasures.
