While play is often associated with children, it is important to recognize its significance for adults as well. Engaging in play allows us to connect with others in a fun, light-hearted context. It provides stress relief, promotes creativity, and improves cognitive function. However, in a society focused on achievement and performance, the value of play often gets overlooked or forgotten. Thus, Tanween 2019 launched the Board Game Challenge.
The “Play” theme of 2019 inspired 30 talented individuals to register for this challenge. Teaming up with the local game company, “Rock, Paper, Scissors,” participants embarked on a journey of creativity and innovation with an engaging series of mini-workshops to design their very own board game. Delving into the specifics of game design, they explored the various criteria and aspects that contribute to a game’s success and popularity.
The primary objective of Tanween’s “Play” theme was to develop and design an engaging and foolproof game to be enjoyed by adults and children alike. Participants engaged in a comprehensive and immersive 40-hour training program in which they explored the multifaceted process of board game development. They began by formulating a captivating concept for their games, followed by the creation of prototypes using basic materials. Prototypes were sent to players for several rounds of feedback, and were modified accordingly.
During the next step, participants crafted the visual design of their games to ensure an appealing and cohesive aesthetic, which is a crucial aspect for the popularity of the game and its marketing success. They then created a design brief that contained all relevant information about their games, including method of play, logo, color palette, name, target audience, budget, and timeline.
To provide clear instructions and guidelines for manufacturers, participants meticulously crafted a detailed game guide or a descriptive manual. This manual included specific details about the production of the game, including card, dice, and game piece numbers and sizes.
Through this comprehensive training, participants acquired the essential skills and knowledge necessary to bring their board game ideas from inception to fruition. Finalists in this immersive challenge presented their game designs to a jury with diverse backgrounds, and after careful evaluation and consideration, one outstanding game concept was selected for production.
The winning game, skillfully ideated and designed by Hassan Al Haikan, entered production in collaboration with “Rock, Paper, Scissors,” and found its way into the Ithra Gift Shop, Jarir Bookstore, and Virgin Megastore where 1705 games were sold, and a part of the profits were earned by Al Haikan. During Saudi Design Week in 2019, as Ithra proudly showcased the remarkable achievements of these creative individuals.
