Course Description:

Throughout this course, calligraphers are welcomed to be introduced to the world- famous Arabic calligraphy and learn one of its many beautiful fonts (Naskh, Ruq’a, or Diwani). Moreover, participants will indulge in learning how to write individual Arabic characters, full words, and short sentences using the mesmerizing fonts that they have learned.

 

Course objectives:

  • Introduce participants to the most renowned types of Arabic fonts.
  • Teach participants about the principles of writing using one of these fonts.
  • Guide participants on the right path to continue learning and mastering these fonts.

 

Course outcomes:

  • To learn how to use and control an Arabic calligraphy pen.
  • To acquire the fundamentals involved with writing with a designated font and further following the rule of the lines.
  • To gain the ability to write individual letters using their designated font.
  • To successfully write connective lines between letters using their designated font.
  • To obtain knowledge regarding how to write some simple and short sentences using their designated font.

Zaki Alhashmi

Zaki Alhashmi is a calligrapher, UNESCO specialist, and an art consultant to the King Abdulaziz Foundation for Research and Archives (Darah) in Riyadh. He holds an Ijazah certificate in Arabic calligraphy, a field in which he has won numerous international awards. Zaki is the author of 25 manuals about the Naskh script, a workbook series comprising 22 booklets teaching Arabic writing for non-Arabs, and the Meaning Landscapes about the role of Arabic fonts in the preservation of Arabic poetry.
