A Retrospective of Photography by Peter Sanders
Searching for Light presents a major retrospective of the work of British photographer Peter Sanders whose career spans more than five decades photographing the Muslim world and beyond. Bringing together approximately 100 of his most iconic photographs, including some never before seen, this exhibition represents one of the most comprehensive expositions of the artist’s work to date. The themes examined span his career photographing the music icons of the 1960s, his photography of the Hajj pilgrimage in 1971, and his journeys to remote lands and encounters with remarkable people.
Spread across five zones, the exhibition forms a journey through his life and across the Muslim world from the sacred cities of Makkah, Madinah and Jerusalem to the remote deserts of Mauritania, Mali and Morocco. From the island town of Lamu in East Africa to the valley of Hud in Hadramaut, Yemen. From Kosovo to Malaysia and Indonesia, and across Muslim China he photographed the people and places shaped by Islam.
The exhibition offers a deeply empathetic vision of the traditional world of Islam and an intimate view into one man’s restless search for light through diverse places, races and traditions.
