The use of cardboard in furniture design has a long history, and it has been applied in many creative and innovative ways. Architect Frank Gehry began using the material in the 1950s. Gheary’s 1972 “Wiggle Chair,” currently produced by Vitra, is a feature of museum design collections around the world and heralded as an icon of its time. More recently, companies such as Ikea have used cardboard extensively to make accessible and affordable mass-produced products. In the Cardboard Furniture Challenge, participants will learn the incredible ways cardboard can be shaped, manipulated and constructed to produce their own original furniture designs.
