Cities are increasingly designed around efficiency, routine, and predictability, leaving few opportunities for curiosity, imagination, and spontaneous play. As playgrounds become more standardized, children are often directed toward predefined ways to play, where each element serves a single purpose and every interaction is already defined. While these spaces encourage physical activity, they leave no room for imagination, exploration, and shared discovery. The Urban Spaces Challenge invites designers to rethink public playgrounds as a space of possibility rather than function. Instead of designing play equipment with a fixed purpose, participants are challenged to create a conceptual playground that encourages open-ended play, where children invent their own ways of engaging with the space through movement, creativity, and imagination. The space will serve as a place where children and parents become active participants, inviting every adult and their inner child to transform play into a shared urban experience.
In this six-day challenge, we look at play as a tool for curiosity, connection, and collective imagination. Participants will design a lightweight, transportable playground that can activate different urban settings, creating spaces where people are free to interpret, explore, and play in ways that are uniquely their own.
