Overview 

The largest annual reading marathon in the Arab World will be held over three days from February 5-7, 2026 at the Ithra Library and a selection of Arabic libraries. The marathon, seeks to inspire the society to read in public libraries, believing in the library’s role in enriching the scientific and cultural life.

Ithra is committed to planting a tree for every 100 pages read, with the ambitious goal of reaching 1,000,000 pages read this year and contribute to planting 10,000 trees.

FAQs

How can I participate in the iRead Marathon?

You can participate by visiting us at the Ithra Library, or any library participating in the marathon, as announced on the marathon’s page.

Do I need to read at one of the libraries locations to participate in the marathon?

Yes, attendance at one of the participating libraries is required for the pages read to be counted.

There is no participating library in my city, what can I do?

You can participate through one of the participating digital libraries.

Is there a specific age group for the marathon?

No, participation is open to all ages.

Do I have to read Arabic books?

No, you may read books in any language.

Which books are eligible for participation?

All books are eligible. Participants may bring a book of their choice, provided it is read inside one of the participating libraries.

Can I participate with more than one book?

Yes, you can.

How will the number of pages read be calculated?

Participants will register their details at the library registration desk before the marathon. After completing their reading, they will record the number of pages read in the marathon booklet and return it to the registration desk. Then, medals will be awarded based on the total number of pages read.

Are there award ceremonies for marathon winners?

No. The marathon is a collective initiative aimed at achieving this year’s shared goal of reading one million pages, contributing to the planting of 10,000 trees. Participants will receive commemorative medals according to the number of pages they read.

Will I plant the tree myself after completing the required pages?

No. The Center will tally the total number of trees at the end of the marathon and will oversee planting them.
