eL Seed

Born in Paris in 1981 to Tunisian parents, eL Seed uses his art as an echo of the stories of the communities that he meets around the world and aims to amplify their voices. He is a contemporary artist whose practice crosses the discipline of painting and sculpture. He uses the wisdom of writers, poets, and philosophers to convey messages of peace and to underline the commonalities of human existence.

His work has been shown in exhibitions and in public places all over the world including most notably on the facade of “l'institut du monde Arabe” in Paris, in the favelas of Rio de Janeiro, on the DMZ between North and South Korea, in the slums of Cape Town and in the heart of Cairo's garbage collectors neighborhood.

His adopted name, eL Seed was inspired at the age of 16 by the French work “Le Cid”, or “The Lord.” This term comes in turn from the Arabic “al Sayed” meaning “the man”.  eL Seed’s art seeks to celebrate communication, open-mindedness and freedom as opposed to restraints on art. He has used the term “calligraffiti” to describe his work, referring to himself as a street artist in multiple locations. While he has praised the increasing tendency to analyze street art and graffiti in academic and artistic terms, he has stressed that “pure graffiti is a spontaneous act that cannot be taught, captured or tamed”. eL Seed has exhibited his work in various public spaces, galleries and institutions including the streets of Paris and New York City, as well as Rio de Janeiro and Cape Town, South Africa. He is currently based in Dubai, UAE.
