Based in Cairo and Cambridge, Mohamad Dakak is a type designer and researcher. He holds a PhD in Typography and Graphic Communication from the University of Reading, where his research explored diversity in Arabic type styles and their impact on readership. He also holds an MA in Typeface Design from Reading and a BA in Visual Communication from Damascus University. Mohamad has worked on several type design projects as both a designer and consultant with high profile companies such as Google, Microsoft and Dalton Maag. Moreover, his typeface Jali was awarded both a Certificate in Typographic Excellence by the Type Directors Club and First Prize in Granshan’s Arabic–Latin category. He has worked as a graphic designer across the Middle East and has taught at the University of Reading, UK. Currently, he serves as an Associate Professor at the German University in Cairo.
