A medical doctor by profession, Ahmed Mater is an artist and producer at the forefront of the Middle East cultural sector, and a significant voice documenting contemporary life in Saudi Arabia and its position in a global context.

Mater has a distinctive artistic style combining research-based techniques to preserve disregarded and forgotten narratives from religion, urban environments, and collective memories, mapping out the Kingdom’s past, present and future, contemplating universally relevant issues of modernization and tradition, faith and globalization.

Mater was the first contemporary Saudi artist to be collected and showcased by major Western museums including the Brooklyn Museum in New York and the Smithsonian in Washington, DC.

In 2017, Mater was appointed the Director of Misk Art Institute – part of the Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Foundation.
