Course Brief Description:

Whether you are new to art or want to deepen your knowledge and enjoyment, the Art of Looking at Art welcomes everyone on a five-day introductory journey designed to deepen the way participants view, understand, and experience art. Through foundational learning, exhibition visits, reflective writing, group critique, discussions on Arab and global art, and direct engagement with a practicing artist, participants will develop a more confident, personal, and informed relationship with art. The course blends observation, emotion, cultural context, and critical thinking, guiding each participant toward discovering their own unique way of seeing.

 

Course Objectives:

  • Understanding foundational concepts and terminology in the visual arts.
  • Recognizing and describing major art forms, styles, and movements.
  • Gaining introductory knowledge of Arab art history and key artists.
  • Developing a structured approach to looking at and analyzing artwork.
  • Building comfort to navigate exhibitions and museum spaces.
  • Expressing personal reactions to artworks through writing and discussion.
  • Understanding the role of the artist's perspective in interpreting art.
  • Identifying factors that influence the popularity and significance of artworks.

Based in Dubai, Razan is a cultural anthropologist, design researcher, and curator with a strong foundation in the culture and creative industries and a specialization in the Middle East. Moreover, she brings extensive experience in research and narrative development, project leadership, and strategic problem-solving. As an anthropologist, Razan is deeply skilled in human-centered methodologies, including ethnographic research, qualitative analysis, and both systems and design thinking. Furthermore, she approaches curatorial work with a critical eye for context, culture, and innovation, shaping meaningful experiences that connect audiences with compelling narratives.
