An Arabic treasure to rediscover

King Abdulaziz Center for World Culture (Ithra) will celebrate International Arabic Language Day through a series of activities and programs aimed at promoting the Arabic language and its cultural and intellectual development on December 18-19, 2020. The Center is also preparing to publish Al-Mu'allaqat for Millennials – a book that addresses and elaborates on the ten odes (Al-Mu'allaqat) which interpret poetry and its literary history, in addition to describing poets' lives and works in both Arabic and English.

International Arabic Language Day is marked by the United Nations on December 18 each year. The publication of the 500-page book, Al-Mu'allaqat for Millennials, which was announced on International Arabic Language Day last year, comes as a product of a joint cultural project with Al-Qafila magazine, which is published by Saudi Aramco. The book explains the meaning behind the poems and their messages, and details important events related to them as well as the artistic significance of their verses. It also delves into both the Arab and mainstream metaphors and allusions by interpreting the text in its historical context, linking their stories with world literature, and interpreting them symbolically in light of contemporary reality, through language aimed at various reading levels.
