In this one day session, participants will learn about the theoretical part of Islamic Illumination, starting with a talk on the history of Islamic illumination and followed by painting a small pattern with gouache gold for students to take home.
The session will cover the following topics:
• Introductory talk about Islamic illumination and development
• Drawing a simple pattern
• Transferring the pattern to final paper
• Painting with gouache gold
• Paint background with another color

Trainer: Esra Al Hamal
Esra Alhamal is a Saudi artist and founder of the educational platform: Islamic Illumination. For the past four years, she has been learning Persian and Turkish illumination with various artists, in addition to a series of intensive courses with the Art of Islamic Pattern and the Prince's School of Traditional Arts. Esra has been teaching in various venues in London for two years and her workshops cover architectural and Quranic patterns.
